From fiddling between radio channels to being captivated by a glorious voice emanating from the radio set, we all have had our tryst with Radio Jockeys. In a profession that is highly dynamic and constantly competitive, it’s quite a task to maintain the stature and following as an RJ. But there are those who have done it all and have been masters in their own right in the world of radio jockeying. Let’s relive our romance with the humble radio as we compile a list of 11 of the most timeless RJs across India.
ASEEM KUMAR KAZI
From the time we have encountered the radio as kids, our most wonderful memory have been those nights of song request programmes. And the person who lured us into the world of lucid music through a voice that’s as glorious as the show itself is Aseem Kumar Kazi. Kazi has been instrumental in establishing music as a fundamental essence of life. And the show which closely connected us with music is the iconic Kalpataru Phone- in programme on All India Radio.
One of the earliest in the business of radio jockeys, Ameen Sayani has been lending his voice stream through air since 1952. The most imitated radio announcer for his trademark phase of introduction ‘Bhaiyyon aur Behnon’, Sayani may even be the precursor to ushering in a world of RJing with a mass appeal.
Now this is one man we all cherish. Yaadon Ka Idiot Box is one show that needs no introduction and the man behind this hugely iconic show is Neelesh Mishra. With his captivating retelling of even the simplest of stories, replete with the right mix of every perceivable emotion, Mishra weaves magic with his craft. And the way he blends in the mood of the story with tracks that just hit the right spot is what makes this person one of our most favorite of radio jockeys ever. Timeless and classic, with every sentiment in place, he is one gem of a talent.
You might not instantly recognise him as radio jockey because acting is what he is versatile at. Nevertheless, this dynamic personality is a motley of talents rolled into one. As an award winning actor, an efficient host of the hit musical show Antakshaari and a television presenter, Annu Kapoor has enticed many. But he has also proved to be quite the enigmatic RJ. Suhaana Safar with Annu Kapoor that narrates anecdotes from the life of Bollywood biggies in Kapoor’s trademark poignant voice has managed to strike a chord with listeners. The award winning show is currently into its 6th year and Annu ji’s style of presenting these lesser known personal tales to the audience has earned him a separate fan following.
If sass and spunk had a personality, none would have embodied it better than RJ Malishka. Her infectious energy, the i-don’t-give-a-damn attitude and the aura she brings in along make her one of the most loved RJs. From interviewing Bollywood celebs in the most interesting way ever to carrying off a show entirely on her own, Mallishka can do it all. That apart, her parodies of popular songs even in the back of stinging taunts (that she reverts back very well of course) has helped her in gaining an instant connect to the masses.
With a zesty voice and a clear rapture instantly brightening up our lazy mornings, RJ Mandy of 93.5 Red FM is among the popular names in the city’s radio circuit. While Morning No 1 lends the perfect start to the day, the popular prank segment Red Murga brings in a dose of humour and light weighted banter into our mundane lives. Mandy is a RJ by chance rather than by choice and her enthusiastic rendition of everyday issues through her chat show lends her immense popularity.
RJ Naved is super-popular for his segment Mirchi Murga. He is a total prankster and a vivacious enthuser of energy. The lengths he goes to evoke the ultimate humor, and in some cases even the annoyance of unsuspecting receivers, has been phenomenal in his rise to success as a radio jockey catering to a mass sentiment.
She happens to be a RJ with a difference. The host of one of the longest running shows ‘Purani Jeans’, Sayema’s soothing, melodious voice is the perfect tone that winds up a relaxing, cozy night. With retro melodies complementing her simple andaaz of relating to listeners, Sayema aces in her role as a radio jockey.
Well, that’s not his real name. You would have known that by now. But perhaps it should have been, given the khurafaties he actually indulges in. With more than 15 years of ruling over the evolving world of radio jockeying, Nitin amazes with his versatility after emerging to become a RJ from a samosa seller.
Balaji Patturaj of 92.7 Big FM is one of those RJs who is highly popular down south. As the host of the hit show Remix, Patturaj has risen to the heights of fame and adulation and portrays “gibberish diversion and constant talking” as his USP.
The childlike (or childish, if you wish) Baua is a character that resonates with every common man who lives from hand to mouth. As a notorious, nagging kid, Baua seemingly puts you off, but therein lies the catch- someone who endows you with a jovial spirit amidst all those cacophony of lives to help you trudge along your day. Well, all those sentiments aren’t something you would associate with Baua and the man behind it- RJ Raunac. But this seemingly chafing kid, distinguished as RJ of the year 2014 is another prized catch for Red FM.
