As one of the most iconic Bollywood jodis ever, the Kajol- Shahrukh chemistry is unmatched. In their decades long career that has seen them come together seven times on screen, creating their characteristic magic in each instance, this is for sure one of the favorite of all Bollywood pairings in history. Here’s revisiting each of the seven Kajol and Shahrukh movies that inspire a bounty of cherished emotion in every Bolly buff-
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge
The longest running film in the history of Indian cinema, it only is apt that the 1995 romantic drama had one of the most iconic pairs play the leads. A cult classic that which continues with a legacy of its own even 25 years after its release, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge is one of the movies that is unmissable for anyone, not just the Kajol and Shahrukh fans.
As a dreamy Simran hailing from a strict and conservative family falls in love with the flamboyant Raj during a life changing Europe trip, albeit after much persuasion and pursual, things get pretty complicated since Simran is already engaged to marry someone else. Raj, however, not the one to yield in to family pressures, specially when it means letting go the love of his life, devises a true Bollywood scheme to make Simran his own. What follows is an endearing tale of love and romance, with of course all due respect accorded to families, making for a film that would go on to be one of the top Indian films of all time. Kajol and Shahrukh’s chemistry was the talk of the town as they sizzled on screen in a romance that soon came to be the defining standard of love for the Indian lot.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
The first of Karan Johar movies that had Kajol and Shahrukh play protagonists alongside Rani Mukherji, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is one of the most loved Bollywood films. Celebrated for its themes of youthful friendship and love and romance that which stands the test of time, the 1998 film explores a love triangle involving the film’s three leads. What makes Kuch Kuch Hota Hai a really special film for both Shahrukh and Kajol fans is the spectacular performance they put in it. Sweeping through the awards of the year, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai proved to be a significant film in the careers of its entire cast and has been particularly hailed as ushering in a new wave of style in Hindi cinema.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
It perhaps is the crackling chemistry shared by Shahrukh Khan and Kajol that makes even Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, the movie with an ensemble cast one of their most memorable outings together. As an adopted Rahul aka SRK falls in love with an economically lower class Anjali played by Kajol much to the disdain of his billionaire father, the couple have no choice but to leave their home and hearths for a foreign land for the sake of being together. As a high voltage familial drama unfolds leading to the parents and the children being reunited in the climax, Karan Johar successfully delivers yet another high grossing blockbuster that which remains a memorable film for each one of the film’s actors.
Baazigar might not be the kind of epic love saga film that which defines the Shahrukh and Kajol pairing across their range of movies together but it still remains an unforgettable outing for both the actors. As Shah Rukh Khan’s breakthrough role as the sole lead and Kajol’s first commercial success, the 1993 film has also been significant in that it heralded the onset of the iconic pairing in Bollywood. As also Khan’s first film in a negative role, Baazigar remains a film memorable for more reasons than one.
My Name is Khan
Yet another Karan Johar film that saw Shahrukh Khan and Kajol reenact their magic on the silver screen, My Name is Khan is one of the movies where the aura of romance unfolds in a way that is characteristically different from what had been portrayed by their previous films. As an autistic Muslim living with his wife played by Kajol and her son in the US, Khan’s family becomes a victim of the 9/11 prejudice that sees the naive protagonist set out to assert his innocence. In being way more realistic and poignant a film than any of the other Kajol- Shahrukh ventures, My Name is Khan holds a place of its own in the gallery of movies starring the golden pair of Bollywood.
While the year 1995 saw the coming together of Kajol and Shahrukh Khan in one of the most iconic movies that DDLJ turned out to be, it was preceded by another blockbuster film starring the hit pair. Karan Arjun is another of the memorable Bollywood movies that which is a reincarnation tale of two brothers played by Shahrukh and Salman Khan. With Kajol playing the love interest of Shahrukh once again though in a film that wasn’t the out and out romance, this is another of the movies Bollywood couldn’t have done without.
The most recent of Kajol and Shahrukh movies, Dilwale might not be the most raved about of their projects but in bringing back the all time favorite jodi together after a five year hiatus, the 2015 outing still appeals as an unforgettable one for die hard fans. Another multi starrer with star kid Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon also playing parallel leads, Dilwale still was a high grosser like each of the other movies that saw Kajol and Shahrukh bring their fab chemistry to play on screen.
