For forever enthusiasts of Indian telly soaps, you would remember her as Sia from the fresh off the beaten path serial Na Aana Is Des Laado but for someone who has stayed off screen for close to eight years now, Natasha Sharma sure would be a name that would take time to ring a bell for you. But the powerful portrayal of a woman who rises against odds to lead an entire community to empowerment against the sarpanch who had long been vilifying females and promoting female infanticide made the image of a resilient, confident Sia emerge from her cocoon a very towering household presence. Needless to say, in her enactment of Sia Singh, Natasha Sharma impressed one and all with her histrionics as well as her strong independent persona.

Born as Natasha Mohan Sharma on 29th May, 1987 at Saharanpur in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (U.P.), Natasha however wasn’t particularly wanting to be an actress. The daughter of a bank official, Natasha had been regularly on the go ever since her childhood. Her exposure to new places and new cultures might have ignited a flame in her to explore more of the social domains which perhaps explains her interest in being a journalist.

In fact acting came to her in part by chance when as a student of journalism at Delhi’s prestigious Miranda House college her encounters with such extracurricular activities were very much part of the curriculum. Eventually as Sharma decided to further her interest in acting once she came to Mumbai, her natural charm and hard work made sure that there was no looking back for her from there on.

Natasha’s audition for Naa Aana Is Des Laado proved to be the turning point in her career- as well as of her life- as she managed to capture the fancy of her producers who were on the lookout for a fresh face that would do justice to the intensely female centric character of Sia in the show. However, the Colors’ daily soap wasn’t exactly her debut project. Prior to landing the role of the protagonist in Naa Aaana…, Natasha Sharma had also worked in a Star One venture titled Shh… Phir Koi hai, a horror thriller television anthology series but it had been her lead character Sia that managed to put her in the limelight.

Natasha also kept intact her inklings with the horror genre on television when she appeared in a celebrity episode of another tele show Aahat. Sharma continued with her cameo appearances by playing a small part in the Zee TV serial Yahan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli in 2011. Natasha also tried her hands at comedy when she became a part of the Hindi Comedy series Comedy Circus Ke Superstars pairing opposite comedy king Kapil Sharma. Outside of acting, Sharma’s appearance on the small screen also saw her hosting the fifth season of the reality show BIG Memsaab on BIG Magic.

While Natasha Sharma’s performance in the socially relevant tele serial was lauded and Sia and her struggles resonated with womenfolk across the country, it was also the adherence of the character on screen to her real life real life ideals as a strong and independent woman that delivered Sia so much a coveted place among Sharma’s concise anthology of works. In fact it was her role in Na Ana Iss Des Lado that won Sharma the best actress award at the Indian Telly Awards in 2010 besides nominating her for the New Actress Award in the same year.

Interestingly, Natasha’s role in Naa Aana Iss Des Laado also paved the way for a life of love and romance. Sharma, who was earlier linked to televison actor Manish Naggdev, is now married to her co star from her Colors outing. As Sia, Sharma played the lead opposite model turned actor Aditya Redij who was her on screen husband. The two shared a great bond off screen and started out as good friends. In fact, Natasha and Aditya built such a close bond with each other that true to her nature, Sharma even ended up throwing a birthday party for Redij with his family and close friends in attendance.

Call it the love on- screen finding way in real life or their incredible fondness for each other, Natasha and Aditya indeed did fall in love. Their affair however was nothing very public with the two going about the relationship in really as non- glamorous a manner as possible. They hadn’t been explicit about their feelings for each other and yet they weren’t even secretive as well. Indeed, it perhaps is how private both of them tend to be as individuals that helped them to keep their personal lives out of public glare.

Even their engagement on 29th April, 2012 was a very low- key, close knit affair in Delhi with only their families in attendance. Their wedding almost two years later on 7th January, 2014 was as intimate a ceremony in Maharashtra where the reel life couple took their vows to be one in real life as well. Aditya being a Marathi and Natasha a Punjabi, the wedding saw a mix of Punjabi and Marathi rituals. While the wedding was solemnised after quite some time of the engagement because Aditya had to concentrate on his career, for Natasha the marriage meant she willingly ditched the camera and decided to concentrate on marital bliss instead.

Natasha Sharma might have been noted for her acting skills but behind the camera she is as talented and dynamic an individual. An aficionado of all things that cater to the yearnings of the soul, Natasha also pens Hindi poetry in her leisure time and likes to listen to ghazals by Jagjit Singh. A friendly soul yet dwelling in her own space, Natasha is hardly seen partying even when she still remains very much a part of the showbiz industry. Even her Instagram profile is one that is not seething with the many dazzles of the celeb life, rather being a medley of visuals that is a window to her life as an individual first and a celebrity later.

Starting out with a show that reflects her real life commitments as well, Sharma did not let go the obligations even when she found fame and success. She had been part of an NGO called Suraksha that aims at educating housemaids and had been actively engaged to that pursuit.

In her head strong, contented persona, Natasha Sharma indeed is the true star- a starry stint on television and a starrier existence in life. Yet fans are eagerly awaiting her return on screen. We hope this pretty lady will indeed make her way to even greater stardom sometime soon.
