In the neverending hassles of daily life to fulfil our goals, we often forget to take care of ourselves. The stressful work-life and the undying hunger to achieve bigger & better, often leave us with no time to spend with our own selves. In the name of entertainment, the random use of the internet takes away all the leftover time and energy at the end of the day, only to make us feel more exhausted & drained! Hence, the urge of self-care diminishes slowly and we forget to unleash our true potential in the long run.

Is there any closure to this vicious circle?

Well, let’s find out 5 simple practices that will allow you to grow & glow from within!

#1 Consistent sound sleep

Start your self-care resume by paying attention to your sleep patterns. The importance of deep sleep in our physical, as well as mental health, is undeniable. Ensuring a sound sleep of at least 8 to 9 hours every day will not only make you feel rejuvenated but also help you work effectively throughout the day.

The increasing workload & stress is found to be one of the main reasons for less sleep. Hence, put extra effort to strike a balance between your work & personal life. Don’t bring your work to home & you will soon notice the difference! Also, try to avoid consuming tea, coffee or alcohol before going to bed. Don’t forget to pay attention to the lighting of your bedroom so that you always wake up feeling fresh and energized the next day!

#2 Include meditation and exercise in your routine

“Anybody can breathe. Therefore anybody can practise yoga”- T.K.V Desikachar

We all know the huge impact of exercise and meditation on our physical as well as mental health. But how many of us actually incorporate the same in our daily routine?

Life hustles often leave us with no time for such healthy practices. Also, social media and the internet prevents us even more from being productive. Make a habit to not look at your phone just after opening your eyes in the morning. Instead, try to start your day with meditation and chants. Also, try to eat right and exercise regularly. Sometimes it might get difficult to manage the gym schedule along with your job, studies or other unavoidable duties. But that should not stop you from taking care of your health. In such busy days, try to take out time for evening walks, yoga or any other light sports instead. These small steps will help you manage your stress levels and also let you stay fit.

#3 Get organized

Sometimes all the mess in your life can be a reflection of your surrounding. An unorganized surrounding can often lead to depression, stress and anxiety. Hence, try to keep your things uncluttered as much as possible. This may seem like a tiny step. But, organizing your stuff is also a part of self-care. It can inevitably uplift your spirit.

Start with organizing your room as it is the place where you spend most of your time. Keep the frequently used items handy, required things in place and get rid of the unnecessary mess. Your working desk, wardrobe and bed should be uncluttered, neat and tidy. It is also advisable to keep the rest of your house organized so that the overall positivity can refresh your mood after a hard day.

#4 It’s not selfish to say “NO”

We often have to deal with stuff even if we don’t want to. Compensating the work of a co-worker, accompanying your roommate to shopping or taking your loved one to his/her friend’s birthday is cool. But that should not be at the cost of your own mental peace. Try to understand that you also deserve the “me-time” after a tiring day at work. Prioritizing self-care over others is not selfish or harmful always. If you are already stressed or overloaded, learn to politely say “NO” to people whenever possible & save yourself from the burnout or irritability. If they truly care about you, they will try to understand. Gift yourself the rest that is required to feel relaxed, rejuvenated and happy.

#5 Take a break

When was the last time you took the effort to spend time with yourself?

When did you last go out for lunch with your friends?

When was the last time you had evening tea with your family?

If answers to these questions are negative, its time to take a break. Getting away from day to day struggle will fill you with new experiences and memories to be cherished forever.

We all have come across the proverb “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. So, never forget to pamper yourself with small breaks every now and then. It can be as small as going for a long drive on the weekends, reading a book on a rainy evening or as extravagant as going on a holiday to your favourite country. Try to manage time effectively so that you can take out time for these little things. These breaks will also give you an inner excitement and make you happy from within. A good company never harms. So, going out with your family and friends can also be fun & memorable.

In the constant battle of balancing needs, ambition, recognition etc. , we often forget to LIVE our life. We spend all our time focussing on the difficulties that life throws at us, being completely indifferent to the well being of our own physical and mental health. Later when we start noticing the decline, we are already buried with stress, anger, irritation and helplessness. Life already comes to a halt by then.

Hence, it is important to take initiative for self-care as much as possible. If you often find yourself exhausted, overloaded, stressed and overworked, do not ignore. Pay attention to the little things we discussed. It will help you prevent a potential breakdown, help you rediscover yourself and make you feel content once again. So promise yourself to give the care that you deserve & live life with more power, potential and positivity.
