Skincare regime for all skin types

Beauty, is in reality, one of the most precious and attractive assets we get the moment after taking our birth in this world. The external sources in a human body where beauty seems to take a natural shape includes the skin and hair. Many a poet and writer have glorified skin and hair in their compositions mostly in the view of beauty. Moreover, the beauty of skin and hair seems to be ethereal when literal compositions are written in its honour by people who view them with a dreamlike creative vision. There are others too who would judge a person first on the basis of his/ her beauty. But, remember everyone is unique and beautiful and none can underrate a person by commenting about his / her looks. Beauty is a totally subjective concept which can be used by people in many ways. While some gives a poetic feeling to it, others use it as a parameter of judging humans. However, skin and hair are the essential biological components of a human body and taking utmost care of them is essential for our own health and well-being. As skin is the largest organ of the body and protects us from microbes and the elements, helps regulate body temperature, and permits the sensations of touch, heat, and cold, it is essential to maintain its quality by taking proper care of it. For this reason, a proper skincare regime must be followed religiously by people strictly in accordance with their skin types.

There are mainly five types of skin in people- oily, dry, combination, sensitive and normal. Oily skin has a bright, porous and humid appearance and the excess oil present in the skin is mostly due to high fat production by sebaceous glands. Dry skin occurs mostly due to cold weather, low air humidity and is characterized by a feeling of tightness and roughness along with itchiness. Combination skin has characteristics of both dryness and oiliness whereas sensitive skin is more prone to react to external factors quickly. The greatest disadvantage of sensitive skin is its level of delicateness and ability to lose its protective function soon thereby making it easy for microorganisms and irritant substances to enter it, and increasing the possibility of having an infection and allergic reactions. Normal skin is the one everyone dreams to have as it is not too oily or dry and has a naturally balanced texture.

For maintaining a healthy skin and of course good looks, here are the different types of skincare regime according to the skin types-

Oily skin

To begin, start your skincare regime by cleaning your face with a mild cleanser that have fruit acids, tea or coffee extracts and citrus extracts. If you are suffering from acne or have acne prone skin, use herbal foaming face washes that have natural oil controlling ingredients. The second step is exfoliation. Both cleansing and exfoliation are essential for oily skin as deep washing of skin is the key to maintain its quality. While a cleanser cleans your skin, removing impurities and dust, an exfoliator removes the dead cells trapped on your skin’s surface to reveal younger and healthier inner skin layer. After deep cleaning, apply a toner which is a great oil controller as it tightens pores and maintains the skin’s pH balance. Look out for toners with rose water, tea tree extracts or aloe vera. Before applying the moisturizer, do put on a face serum as it is a good ingredient for deep rejuvenation of the skin. Next apply a moisturizer to strengthen your skin’s barrier and protect it from external damages. Always look for light oil free moisturizers. The last step is to wear a sunscreen with a miniumum SPF 30 that is specially formulated for oily skin. Sunscreen is necessary for oily skin as exposure to the sun leads your oil glands into producing more sebum which results in acne and various skin issues.

Dry skin

Cleaning and moisturizing are the two main important steps to be followed seriously by persons with dry skin for maintaining a healthy look. If you have dry skin, start your skincare routine by cleaning your face with a gentle, non-foaming cleanser as these products remove dirt and oil without disrupting the outer skin layer the way that some foaming cleansers do. Next, use a hyaluronic acid serum as it is a great boon for dry skin. Besides hydrating and revitalizing your skin with a good amount of moisture, the best thing is that it absorbs quickly and does not leave a sticky residue behind. Apply it to clean damp skin and uplift it further with a nourishing moisturizing cream that has hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or squalane. Don’t forget to finish off your healthy skincare routine with a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

Combination skin

As combination skin has both surfaces that are dry as well as oily, the skincare products must be chosen very carefully. Make sure to use a facial cleanser that will help mattify your oily T-zone without over-drying your cheeks and under-eye area. The next step is to use a toner to remove any oil that your cleanser didn’t and balances your skin’s pH levels. However, the toner must be an alcohol free, astringent one that don’t cause dryness. For moisturizing, it is best if you can use two moisturizers. Choose a creamy formula for dry areas and for oily parts, choose a lightweight, water-based formula. The last step of your skincare regime is to use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30.

Sensitive skin

Persons having sensitive skin needs to be extremely careful of the types of products they use as it is more prone to damage, allergies and diseases. It is always recommended by dermatologists that you should perform a patch test if you want to try any new product or anything that you doubt to apply on your delicate skin. To clean your skin, use a gentle sulfate and paraben free cleanser that does not lather or foam as it will help get rid of dirt without irritating your skin. Although toning is not compulsory, but if you want to apply a toner, use one with calming ingredients like chamomile and green tea extracts as they are anti-inflammatory and help reinforce your skin’s barrier. Use a gentle and hydrating face mist to calm your skin. While moisturizing, use moisturizers that are fragrance free and hypoallergenic as it keeps skin hydrated without irritating it. Complete your skincare regime with a zinc oxide infused sunscreen as it is best irritation free product for sensitive skin.

Normal skin users can choose any type of cleanser. However, it is always best to use a sulfate free, gently foaming cleanser for your face. Use a toner with hydrating and skin brightening ingredients for the perfect glowy look. Choose either a creamy based or light weight moisturizer as per your preference. Finish the perfect look of your skin by applying a sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
