NaMo’s “Main Bhi Chowkidar” – Is it the “Aal Izz Well” syndrome?

mein bhi chowkidar

Elections 2014 – NaMo aka the firebrand Prime Minister of India was born, a brand was created..thereafter it was “Ghar Ghar Mei NaMo, Haar Ghar Mei NaMo.” The connection was at the lowest level, at the most common of the common man…the “Chaiwala”……a connection to the heart and soul of the country. The magic worked and NaMo ruled…

Elections 2019 – NaMo aka the not so firebrand Prime Minister of the country needs a rebirth, brand NaMo needs a re creation….The connection once more at the lowest level, another common man…”Main Bhi Chowkidar” is born….Will the magic work again?

From the “Chaiwala” to “Main Bhi Chowkidar” – it’s been five long years of promise, of promises kept and broken, of the dreams of the common man, nurtured yet not so real….has NaMo really upgraded from the Chaiwala to the Chowkidar? Or is it the “Aal Izz Well” syndrome from the movie 3 Idiots…where in the lead protagonist’s village there lived an old Chowkidar who remained awake all night shouting “Aal Izz Well” while the entire village slept in peace and anticipated safety…only to realise one fine day that the old Chowkidar was as blind as a bat!!

The Prime Minister wants a fresh mandate to carry on and complete his mission of transforming India…has his mission failed or is it on the right path towards transformation?

National Security:

NaMo’s opposition reports a 260% increase in terror activities and a doubling of infiltration at the borders during his tenure, however figures quoted by government statistics do not adhere to these reports and claims. Though there are reports of an increase in the number of terror activities in India governed Kashmir in recent years as compared to 2003, the overall security situation in the country taking into consideration the insurgency affected north east India, the left wing extremism etc, the situation and levels of terror activities remains almost the same. Accordingly to the government sources, under the government lead by the opposition between 2009 and 2013 a total of 1,717 incidents were reported. Similarly between 2014 and 2018 under the NaMo lead government there were 1,708 incidents reported. There has also been a sharp decline in deaths related to terrorism in the northeastern region and with reports of more than 3000+ Maoists surrendering before the state between 2014 and 2017, the NaMo government does deserve a small thumbs up with regards to the safeguarding of the national security of the country.

Women Safety :

NaMo lead government swears to have introduced tougher laws to ensure the safety of women. Their opposition claims that women safety is a huge concern in these past years.

Data shows that although stricter rules have been laid down, enforcement of the same, together with the conviction rates of such cases in the courts of law have been dismal. The data also shows a rise in the reporting of rape cases. However the government data says that from 2005 to 2016 only 12% – 20% of the rape convictions were completed even though the NaMo government had promised to set up 1000 fast track courts to clear this backlog of rape case convictions.

It’s still a long way to go to ensure women’s safety in the country along with providing justice for them.

The Indian Village :

The angry villagers have been coming out on the streets of the country’s national and economic capitals viz Delhi and Mumbai seeking better financial status. Some thousands of the farming community commit suicide and die on a yearly basis, the reason not being able to handle the debts!

NaMo promised that he would double all farmer’s income by the year 2022, a promise probably broken considering the signs of depression in the rural economy, although official figures do show a rise in income from 2003 to 2016. The current data is not available for reasons best known to the incumbents. Although the government under NaMo did introduce some pro farmer policies like the crop insurance scheme, a soil health card scheme to increase productivity and an online trading platform to enhance marketing, the farmers were the ones who were hit the hardest with the demonetisation of the ₹500 and ₹1000 notes by the same government. The note ban did not directly affect the cultivation process, infact it had been a year of good rains and a bumper harvest. But surplus played spoilsport along with the note ban as the shop keepers, the purchasers of the farm produce were cash short! The bumper crops were not bought, it never reached the markets and failure of the government to provide proper storage facilities lead to a worse situation. It’s a total inefficient handling of the farmer value chain that has lead to the crisis in the rural economy.

Industrial Growth :

NaMo promised a 25% contribution to the country’s GDP through the manufacturing sector, it was a percentage almost similar to promises made by all Governments but almost never realised. The Make In India project, an ambitious vehicle launched in 2014 seems to have lapsed to a mere whimper with the passing years. Aiming at creation of jobs for millions, this project has not been able to do that, nor has it been able to increase the contribution of manufacturing sector towards the GDP. Although currently there is no value addition, these efforts may pay off in the future with increased investments in biotech, the skill development and imparting of training arena and along with India ranking higher in the list of ease of doing business countries. However industry experts say that industrial growth is a long and sustained one and does not happen overnight, the results may be visible in another seven to eight years down the line. Till then Make In India remains a distant dream with the status of the jobless remaining unchanged.

Smart Cities :

A 100 Smart Cities in five years, the pledge of NaMo, still reverberates above the rush and din of the urban chaos and not a single Smart City in sight. It was probably a mission labelled impossible under the red tape infused government scheme of affairs. The first delay as the government laments was in the choice of cities to be made Smart, so the delivery time line has been extended to 2023. Next comes the allocation of funds and the actual spending on the project, official data shows an allocation of 166 billion rupees between 2015 and 2019 while only 35.6 billion rupees have been actually spent on the project till January 2019. Then comes the concern of how this money has been spent and a total lack of coordination among the implementing agencies. The cities remain just cities creaking under poor and inadequate infrastructure and increased influx of the population, Smart after all remains just an adjective to define the mission!

Constitutional Safeguard :

Sedition, saga of the holy cow, temple run and re runs, death of the liberal thought, re writing the history of the country, renaming roads, stations, cities, crony capitalism, flight of the corrupt privileged, online trolls, offline shams, rise of the yoga gurus into new age business icons, hindutva, non Hindus….

Thereafter NaMo turns blind like the Chowkidar in the “Aal Izz Well” syndrome which teaches us to keep our hearts confused by telling him that “Aal Izz Well…All Izz Well…”
