“Jhini re jhini re jhini chadariya, jhini re jhini re jhini chadariya
Ke ram naam ras bhini chadariya, jhini re jhini re jhini
Ashta kamal dal charkha doley, panch tatva, gun tini
Saiin ko siyat mas dus lagey, thokey-thokey ke bini
So chadar sur nar muni odi, odi ke maili kini
Das kabir jatan so odi, jyon ki tyon dhar deen”

                                                                                                       – lyrics of a rock ballad by Indian Ocean

The wisdom of the 15th century Sant Kabir still lives on as rock ballads! On his 500th birth anniversary Kabir becomes more relevant in the present times of strife and disharmony since he is known for being critical of both Hinduism and Islam. Kabir suggested that True God is with the person who is on the path of righteousness, considered all creatures on earth as his own self, and who is passively detached from the affairs of the world. Kabir wrote his poems in vernacular Hindi and called them verses of wisdom or “dohe”.

There is even a rock band inspired by Sant Kabir known as “Kabir Cafe”, it is a unique intiative by the young band members to bring the wisdom of Kabir’s poetry into the urban space. “It’s not just about music and melody. It goes deeper than cords and rhythm. It is about Kabir and the beauty of his simple philosophy,” explains Raman Iyer, member of the band. The Folk Music band members even insists that it was not they who chose Kabir but it was Kabir who chose them!

Celebrating the 500th birthday of the worldly wise poem, these “dohes” are dedicated to Kabir and his eternal wisdom about life and living:

Jo Karenge So Bharenge Tu Kyon Bhayo Udaas….”
