The world is constantly changing, the human necessarily evolving and so would be associated a similar dynamic with each and every concept of living. From personal life to the professional fore and everything in between there asserts indeed a metamorphosis of sorts such that is expected to serve the current interests and needs of what they allude, of course for the better.
Even when the truths of eternality and universality continue to hold relevance, it still is essential that psychological dimensions of existence further their scope or morph at least to such assuming of form that fits in with the contemporary character. What however strikes as interesting in considerations like these is that it isn’t just traditional understandings of the world that are required to embrace newer and emerging modes of livability. Relatively modern concepts too can be as much in need of some transforming to keep up with the times.
One very important doctrine of living that has experienced constant growing and adapting ever since relates to both the personal and professional aspects of the human existence. The reference is to what we know as the enormously explored work- life balance which perhaps is the most popular factor in dwelling upon a greater work-life interface. But while this balance in evoking the most ideal representation of personal and professional life is as thrust upon today as it has always been, which spans much earlier than its existence as a concrete term since the 1980’s, the understanding of it still has been subtly but surely changing.
The encompassing of an essence that is more and more progressive in considering has been a feature of the concept that work-life balance occurs as. And while the shifts in its interpretation themselves are significant in redefining the term and reshaping its construct, there has been in more recent times the emergence of a newer jargon upon this platform of a cumulative connotation. Allowing then for adjustments to be made on either end of the balance such that the composite whole of that arising presents a more realistic end in arriving at would be the newer expression that has come to assume identity as work-life harmony instead.
For long now, the non-existent consensus on work-life balance has dealt upon a fine but firm line to be drawn in separating home and office into two distinct spheres of everyday life. But it would be exactly this attempt at demarcating as exclusives the two physical spaces that would obscure the concept enough for it to struggle in fact to hold relevance. For the human life itself is intertwined an existence in each of its individual features and to try and discount the overlappingness of such occurrence specifically in the present day time and age when interconnectedness rules large is but a fallacy in even aspiring for.
The greater truth being then an irreversible non-exclusivity in actual existence, it would make more sense if one were to consider such a ‘model’ that does not view the bustles of work and the hustles of life in isolation from each other. No wonder the much hyped about concept of work life balance continues to be elusive for the larger part of it. It of course would be unrealistic to expect that one’s career would not crossover with their living experience specifically when conveniences of flexibility and technology has rendered life easier. With the privilege thus resting in your working schedule being less orthodox, it should be somewhat unfair to assume that your personal time should continue to be as unaccounted for outside the considerations of your own self only.
This however does not mean that we are in favor of jumbling up our work and lives to the extent that deprives us of our peace and human saneness. It of course ultimately is about what works best as per personal expectations, which in itself can be challenging to attend to given the wholly individualistic mode of that occurring. And this exactly is what has been spurring therefore a greater interest in the more dynamic denoting of harmony. To be frank, work-life harmony is more psychological a ground of working that deliberates upon the whys rather than the concrete whens and whats of happening. That is what is needed though which is what endows upon this newfound narrative a character of greater accountability.
The greatest disillusion perhaps rests in the way work is perceived. That itself is an irony though since even in all our purported disinterest in such working, we still are doing more and more of it. The attribution might be to everything from making money to not fall behind in the highly competitive world but the ultimate reality is that we ourselves have chosen this mode of living to define our identities. Viewing work as a means to an end that we hope to enjoy essentially posits it as the opposite of what we otherwise proclaim as the journey being more important than the destination. A mere shift then in the ideology of our believing, or even a few adjustments allowed to be made in this regard can work wonders in making harmonious existence the reality of our living.
The idea implied in a harmonious notion of working and living is realistic in the flowingness of its happening. The strict requirements of balance in exact equals is almost artfully dismissed by the call for harmony that derives from the complementariness of its nature. As such aiming for work life harmony imbues our existence with a quality that does not unnecessarily fuss over the minute differences in being out of place vs all over the place. By not burdening with a pressure that plays upon our mind all the time, this ‘meditativeness’ of what is sparked by an aspiration for harmony helps our cause in more than one way of working.
Once we have chosen to not unduly concern ourselves with the quantities of what the balanced take leads to, we realise that we can at times do well by overworking indeed as long as we take it upon ourselves to make up for the lost moments in some other more conducive capacity. Hurrying back into personal zone even when you have real work to attend to only means that the worth of your career will be compromised. That itself is not the most favourable of reasoning to go all out for attaining balance and add to it the stress that will be exerting on you in subconscious working of that knowledge and your personal time would not be any better utilised as well. In fact the opposite effects might dawn, in the form of stress ruining everything from your mental and physical health and your relationships as well, such that you are nowhere near the equilibrium point of what you hoped to inch towards in all your efforts in maintaining the seemingly perfect ideals of a work-life balance.
The way around this is to do instead what needs to be done as part of your job at the time it is needed to. Equivalently, taking the same liberties in your personal version of living while maintaining a clear communication regarding your efforts and corresponding expectations will mean that the route to excellence will be realised rather organically.
In a parallel area of discussion, the purpose of serving by work-life balance tends to be essential as well. The more enlightened human being of today has begun to prioritise living indeed over working. And while there’s nothing wrong in that as a choice that one makes, the strategic implications of what that might entail cannot be nullified as well. For folks who do not want to prioritise one over the other but cannot also seem to strike a balance between the two, the understanding and pursuing of the harmonious concept that has increasingly come to be can be immensely rewarding.
The key then is to not drag oneself and function as naturally as possible, whether it be office work one is attending to or indulging in living their personal life. That might sometimes means favoring career over family and vice versa. The fact of the matter though is one more congenial. In seemingly prioritising either of these two integral components of human living, what one actually does is ensuring that none of such essentials are taken for granted. The overall experience thus occurring being what matters ultimately, there cannot be any wrong or right proportion of how you strive to do the wrongs some right.
And yet all in such righteousness of doing as what you deem appropriate, there needs to be other considerations as well that could do more than well with some attending. The call for balance that fans an idea of proportionate representation being well overcome by the seeping in of a harmonious realisation, work-life harmony also allows for the case to further in more human essentials.
Whether you find yourself low on energy some particular period of work or experience a enthusiastic high in an other extent of time, the option that asserts in compensating such ‘vagaries’ of human nature means that you are not pointlessly going through the grind without any corresponding result to show for it. This means that you only function when you are the most productive that itself translates as an increase in efficiency and effectivity. In this and similar such arenas of nonprejudice, work-life harmony delivers by overturning the meticulous attention to exaggerated detail.
Work is not the opposite of life, it is a part of our entire existence and something that matters differently for different individuals. Wanting to create separate spaces for both in the perfect symmetricity of what would emerge as a pleasing idea in balance is not just irrational, it would also be an unwanted invitation for the monster of occupational burnout to creep in. The realisation of this truth is the first step in living a harmonious life, whether in personal and/ or professional proceeding along the path of evolved living of the human species.
