A largely disappointing World Cup, no major record breaking performance and now a slipping Ballon d’Or, 2018 just does not seem to be the year for the two giants of the footballing world.
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo might be the most revered among the current lot of footballers, but with emerging new stars in the soccer horizon, the decade long dominance might as well be on the wane.
And this fact isn’t substantiated any better than the fact that this year’s Ballon d’Or- football’s most coveted award has been presented to Luca Modric from Croatia.
Currently the world’s top male player at the Best Fifa Football Awards and also receiver of the Golden Ball award for the best player at the World Cup, Modric dedicated the award to all of the other players who have missed out in the 10 years dominated by Messi and Ronaldo.
This is the first time after 2007 when Kaka won the coveted award that Ballon d’Or has been clinched by some other player breaking the monopoly of Messi and Ronaldo.
Ronaldo however managed to claim second spot among the top 10 behind the Croatian and Real Madrid star. Lionel Messi managed to grab the fifth spot following Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe in the third and fourth spots respectively.
